Boy, can life change quickly! One day you’re being hailed a king with palm branches and garments being spread on the ground as you pass by with the crowd singing your praises and the next thing you know you’re being rejected and crucified. Oh what a fickle people we are. As we begin this week I can’t help but be reminded that Christ knew exactly what was coming His way. While He did know, I don’t believe His human mind fully comprehend the pain that His body would suffer, but He knew it was coming. He knew who would betray Him. He knew those closest to Him wouldn’t stand with Him. He knew it all. He knew that years later you and I would be alive and many through the years would reject Him and yet He chose the cross. Can you imagine what His last week must have felt like for Him? We talk about the pain of the cross and rightfully so, but can you imagine what He must have felt even before He got to that point?
41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42 saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. Luke 19:41-42
Palm Sunday was the highpoint of the week. This one the day that everyone seemed joyful. A day of celebration if you will. If we really look at the story this day, as enjoyable as it may seem, was the first step to the cross and Christ knew that. He fully understood that these people wanted an earthly king, but He came to be king in their hearts.
As we begin this week let us not forget exactly what Christ did for us.
