Holy Week: Complete Holiness

12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry: 13 and seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. 14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it. 15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves; 16 and would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves. 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine. 19 And when even was come, he went out of the city. We often hear about Jesus overthrowing the tables of the money changers in the temple and at times we hear about the fig tree, but seldom are they mentioned together. To get a better understanding of the story you must read the whole passage.  I believe that together it shows a side of Christ that many choose to ignore and no I’m not speaking of His judgment, although that certainly applies. I believe it shows us just how zealous He is for complete worship and holiness. How often have we talked about God’s grace? It’s a fairly common topic for any christian. So much so that it almost becomes a crutch that we use. God has so much mercy and grace that He’ll just overlook our neglect of listening to His Word, right? Only there comes a time that He won’t and we have no idea when that time will be.
Time and again the Bible likens believers to trees. We know this was a literal tree that Jesus cursed, this isn’t a parable. How ironic is it that it was a fruit tree though? It wasn’t a walnut tree, pecan tree, or eatable flowers, it was a fig tree. I’ve never seen the Bible say that believers should produce flowers, but I’ve repeatedly seen that we should bare fruit. Surely this wasn’t the only thing that Jesus saw on His days on earth that wasn’t producing as it should. Yet this is the only time He cursed it. What was the difference? I believe that this was His last days on earth and this was going to be  written as an example to us. Just as in His last days on earth, I believe we are in our last days and with that comes a time that God will begin a purging. The Bible tells us that He will separate the wheat from the chaff. I believe the separation has begun, we are in the last days. Daily examination isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. I’ve said numerous times that I’m not perfect, but I’m striving towards it. There are things, even recently, that I’ve failed at and I’m working on correcting. Without daily examination I’d miss the mark even more. His desire is complete worship and holiness in me and that should be my desire as well!
