I was in two Sunday School classes today. Strange, I know, but that’s just the way it went. Both had the same lesson but the teachers went in very different directions. The lesson was simply titled A Friend of God. The first lesson focused on obedience. Luke 15: 14 lets us know Christ considers us His friend if we obey.
How many of us find that we complain about Adam and Eve? It’s pretty easy to do; it’s because of them that we are born into this world with sin. Their sin caused a divide between mankind and God. It’s as if we believe our disobedience doesn’t do the same. It’s not just the “big” sins that create a separation between us and God. Anytime, yes you read that accuratly, anytime we disobey God we create a divide between us. That means when I see God’s Word says not to gossip and backbite, but I just really gotta share the news of what happened, I created a separation between God and I. When the Word says to love thy neighbor and I’m pretty sure that means only the neighbors I like because some people are just stupid and they don’t really deserve to be loved, I created a separation. Perhaps it’s not something specifically in the Word, maybe God told me to give $1,000 in the offering, but I didn’t listen because I felt that was entirely too much money, I put distance between God and I. What about when God tells me to trust Him and I don’t? Disobedience will cause distance between God and mankind everytime.
One of the things mentioned in the second Sunday School lesson was trust. We must trust in Him to be His friend. We must diligently seek Him knowing that He will meet us where we are.
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded of them that diligently seek him Hebrews 11:6
Then we moved on to morning worship. The scripture text was Matthew 6:19-34. The minister spoke on putting God first and placing your trust in Him alone.
It seems there was a theme woven throughout today’s lessons and message. Trust God in all things knowing that if you don’t you have placed distance between you and the savior. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I want to be by His side and not miles away simply because I refuse to obey. That means when life is hard, I have to trust Him. When I’ve allowed things to hurt me, I have to trust Him. When I don’t understand the how or why of a situation, I have to trust Him.
O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8
Amen and praise God for teaching us as we grow in him
